Santenay Le Chainey white 2023 | Guérin family

PRICES ARE PER BOX

A rare cuvée from the Côtes de Beaune, renowned for its top wines, unavailable anywhere else in the Netherlands. This subtle, elegant wine with minerality and a delicate woody touch offers the best value for money among the often more expensive Santenay Le Chainey wines, from a lesser-known but authentic, dedicated winemaker.

A clear, light yellow color. The nose reveals aromas of white flowers, accompanied by subtle vanilla notes. On the palate, this Chardonnay surprises with its freshness, complemented by flavors of peach, flint, and a hint of toast. The finish is lingering and refined.

Body: powerful

Sweetness: dry

Acidity: high acidity

Food pairing: this wine pairs well with dishes such as baked scallops, delicate white fish, poultry, young mature cheeses such as Comté, and even a refined snack platter.

The estate

The Guérin family has been active as winegrowers in Change for five generations. Originally starting out with mixed farming, they switched completely to viticulture in the 1970s, with a 6-hectare vineyard. In the 1990s, they stopped livestock and fruit farming to focus entirely on viticulture, resulting in 45 hectares of vineyard in 2016. Today, Pierre-Antoine and Manon, the fifth generation, manage 60 hectares of vineyard, 35 of which are classified as Hautes-Côtes de Beaune.

They use sustainable methods, such as high, wide vines, which promote biodiversity and reduce the use of machinery and additives. Since 2020, the estate has held the HVE 3 label (Haute Valeur Environnementale 3). Part of the production is sold through a cooperative, while another part is bottled at the estate and sold exclusively to local business contacts (and the occasional private individual who happens to visit the cellar), making the Guérin family's wines relatively rare, especially outside France.

  • The grapes are gently pressed immediately upon arrival in the cellar using a pneumatic press, with no sulphites added during pressing. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel cuves to preserve the freshness and purity of the fruit.

Subsequently, the wine matures for about six months in oak barrels, providing additional structure and a subtle wood touch, without dominating the expression of the terroir.
